Chemistry costs less than the equipment it protects.

Replacing a corroded heat exchanger bundle costs two orders of magnitude more than a properly-specified corrosion inhibitor programme. Refilling a contaminated product tank costs more than the treatment programme that would have prevented the contamination. Chemistry still gets under-funded, because it doesn't show up as a line item on a CapEx budget.

Our chemical solutions division puts numbers against that investment. We build treatment programmes scoped to a measurable outcome (corrosion rate, throughput, product specification, downtime) and held to it. We run it as a technical relationship rather than a supply contract.

Practical approach

How we run a treatment programme.

  1. Baseline analysis. Sample the system, characterise the feed, identify the failure modes chemistry needs to control.
  2. Programme design. Specify products, dosing rates, injection points and monitoring regime.
  3. Dosing system review. We check pumps, lines and injection quills, and our mechanical team installs new equipment if required.
  4. Monitoring and adjustment. Routine lab analysis, on-site coupons, real-time corrosion probes where justified.
  5. Quarterly review. Performance against KPI, programme adjustments, cost rationalisation.
  6. Annual review. We check whether the chemistry achieved its purpose, and set the 5-year trajectory and the next intervention.

Steve Wilkens, Webmech Executive Director, is a qualified metallurgical and chemical engineer who has worked across the chemistry stack, from water treatment through to hydrocarbon processing. The division sells technical depth rather than chemicals.

Is this a one-off product supply or an ongoing relationship?

Mostly ongoing. The value of process chemistry comes from continuous monitoring and adjustment as feed conditions change. Webmech engagements typically include monthly site visits, lab analysis, dosing recommendations, and quarterly performance reviews.

How do you measure success in a chemical solutions engagement?

Against the client's actual asset KPI: product yield, throughput, corrosion rate, equipment availability, or whatever the chemistry is supposed to influence. We measure success in the asset's performance trajectory, not in litres of chemical sold.
